La juventud nos permite tener un panorama más estrecho pero a la vez menos sujeto a las expectativas del mundo que nos rodea. También puede ser un fantástico semillero para las ideas que más adelante simplemente sería imposible desarrollar. Esto es evidente en el cuarteto The Regrettes, que es liderado por Lydia Night, una joven cantante y guitarrista que derrama toda su energía y visión personal del mundo a través de sus canciones, que ella misma compone. Su intención es contar sus experiencias personales y a la vez transmitir la idea de que uno puede lograr sus propósitos y salir adelante, pero sin miedo a decir las cosas tal como son y utiliza lenguaje más colorido cuando la temática lo amerita. Todas las letras tienen una dulce aspereza que resulta refrescante en contraste con tantas composiciones musicalmente intrascendentes y vacuas que actualmente nos sofocan.
Provienen de Los Ángeles, California y su estilo musical es principalmente Punk rock y Riot grrrl con Garage pop. Es música sincera y sentimos esa legitimidad en cada canción que escuchamos. A la fecha han lanzado un álbum de estudio titulado Feel Your Feelings Fool! del que se desprende Hey Now y también dos EPs. Los cuatro integrantes son adolescentes y Lydia Night es la más joven, tenía 16 años cuando lanzaron el álbum. Los demás son Genessa Gariano en la guitarra principal, Sage Chavis en el bajo y Maxx Morando en la batería. Este último dejó la agrupación en mayo de este año.
La letra de Hey Now narra una ocasión en la que Night se enamoró de alguien y muestra ese interés en él y a la vez la impaciencia que ella misma cuenta que la caracteriza. No es la típica canción de amor, pues narra ciertas verdades que también le ocurren a una persona en la vida real, pero a la vez cuenta cómo sentía ese crush y nos la imaginamos en algún momento viéndolo con grandes ojos de ternura.
La canción también está acompañada por un muy bien producido video que relata otra historia. Está ambientado en la década de los 50s en Estados Unidos y recrea un programa musical como los que se emitían entonces en la televisión. El papel de presentador es interpretado por Murray Hill y lo hace tan bien que lo convierte en un ser vil y desagradable. El video enfrenta de lleno el impune sexismo que entonces había, en particular en la industria musical; el racismo que era visto por algunos como normal y los estándares que se supone algunos debían seguir. Hasta promueven el consumo de tabaco entre adolescentes, con simpáticas consecuencias. La banda, que es la invitada a tocar en vivo, se revela contra esas imposiciones y el video toma un giro más alegre y legítimo conforme se acerca al final.
Para cerrar, The Regrettes tocan una música con una energía que sólo las edades de sus integrantes le pueden dar, es joven, fresca y pide a todo pulmón que les den el espacio que merecen. La buena música se sigue creando, sólo que ya no la encontraremos donde estábamos acostumbrados a hallarla.

The Regrettes – Hey Now (2017)
Youth allows us to have a narrower outlook on life but at the same time we’re not yet bound by what the world is expecting us to do. It can also be a fantastic breeding ground for ideas that further on would be simply impossible to develop. This is evident in the four-piece band The Regrettes, who are led by Lydia Night, a young singer and guitarist who spills all her energy and personal vision of the world through her songs, which she herself composes. She wants to share her personal experiences and at the same time convey the idea that one can achieve their goals and get ahead in life, but without fear of telling things as they really are and even uses more colorful language when the subject matter calls for it. All the lyrics have a sweet harshness that is refreshing in contrast to so many vapid and empty songs that currently suffocate us everywhere.
They are from Los Angeles, California and their musical style is mainly Punk rock and Riot grrrl with Garage pop. It’s honest music and we feel that legitimacy in every song we hear. To date they have released a studio album entitled Feel Your Feelings Fool! from which Hey Now is released, and two EPs. The four members are teenagers and Lydia Night is the youngest, she was 16 years old when the album was released. The other members of the band are Genessa Gariano on the lead guitar, Sage Chavis on the bass and Maxx Morando on the drums. Morando left the group in May of this year.
The lyrics of Hey Now talk about a time when Night fell in love with someone. She shows interest in him but at the same time the impatience that she admits characterizes her, makes an appearance. It is not the typical love song, because it tells certain truths that also happen to a person in real life, but at the same time talks about the way she felt about her crush and we can almost picture her looking at him with huge puppy eyes.
The song is accompanied by a fantastic video that tells another story. It is set in the 50s and recreates a music show like those that were then broadcast on television. The role of the presenter is played by Murray Hill and he does it so well that his character is seen as vile and unpleasant. The video fully confronts the rampant sexist culture that was then common, particularly in the music industry; the racism that was seen by many as normal and the standards that some people were supposed to follow. They even promote tobacco consumption among teens, with comical consequences. The band, who are the invited guests to play live, rebel against those impositions and the video takes a more cheerful and legitimate turn as towards the end.
The Regrettes play their music with an energy that only their age can provide. It’s young, fresh and asks with all their might for the space they truly deserve. Great music is still being made, and these talented musicians are the proof.
