Cuando escucho música nueva, en especial de una agrupación que acabo de descubrir, lo que normalmente me ocurre es que inconscientemente comienzo a trazar paralelos entre lo que estoy oyendo y la música que ya conozco y está grabada en mi mente y puedo con facilidad decir me recuerda a esta banda o algo similar se encuentra en tal álbum. Sin embargo, con Deep Sea Diver eso no ocurrió y apenas encontré lazos con otros artistas. Para mis oídos, su música es legítimamente nueva y por lo mismo, agradablemente refrescante. Los conocí gracias a que el vídeo del sencillo Impossible Weight apareció entre mis sugerencias en YouTube y me llamó tanto la atención la combinación de la imagen con el nombre del grupo que lo vi de inmediato. Pocas veces he estado tan agradecido por una recomendación como en este caso.

Deep Sea Diver nos traen un álbum lleno de honestidad y frescura que de inmediato nos muestra que frente a nosotros tenemos un disco de música sincera que fue creada con cariño. Este es el resultado del trabajo de una agrupación que sabe lo que quiere y lo plasman en sus canciones. Su música es pura y orgánica e invita a reflexionar a medida que cada una de las canciones se va desarrollando. También encontramos sencillez en la música, que contrario a estar cargada, fue sutilmente decorada con detalles instrumentales esparcidos a lo largo del álbum y eso se traduce en que escucharlas también es un bonito paseo en el que vamos descubriendo y reencontrando todos esos pequeños secretos ocultos a plena luz y nos transmite una sensación de estar soñando despiertos. Todo es muy real, pero lo vemos a través de un delgado velo, en especial por los sonidos que el etéreo teclado emite.

Pero lo que más destaca es la voz de Jessica Dobson, quien es la cabeza de Deep Sea Diver y junto a su característica forma de interpretar la guitarra están al frente de cada uno de los temas del disco, que también fueron escritos por ella luego de tomar como inspiración sus vivencias después de haber lanzado el álbum anterior de la agrupación y también las experiencias que vivió al trabajar de voluntaria como una manera de superar la depresión que atravesaba. Por lo mismo, las letras son introspectivas y van revelando facetas de cómo Dobson interpreta el mundo que la rodea y la manera en la que busca ayudar a quienes más lo necesitan.

Deep Sea Diver fue formada en Seattle, en el estado de Washington y está integrada por Jessica Dobson, quien es la voz principal, guitarrista y teclista, también por su esposo, Peter Mansen en la batería, Garrett Gue en el bajo y Elliot Jackson en los teclados y guitarra. Impossible Weight es el tercer álbum de estudio que han lanzado y en la canción que da el nombre al disco, además de poseer un pegadizo coro, también tiene como cantante invitada a la talentosa Sharon Van Etten, quien el año pasado lanzó el álbum Remind Me Tomorrow. Impossible Weight es un trabajo fantástico que comparto ya que es un disco que destaca entre la música que he descubierto en este año y me alegro grandemente de haber encontrado a esta sensacional agrupación. Pueden escuchar y comprar el álbum y el resto de su discografía aquí, en verdad lo valen.

Deep Sea Diver – Impossible Weight (LP) (2020)

When I listen to new music, especially from a group that I have just discovered, what usually happens to me is that unconsciously I begin to draw parallels between what I am hearing and the music that I’ve already listened to and remember and I can easily tell myself this reminds me of  that band or something similar can be found in whatever album. However, with Deep Sea Diver that did not happen and I barely found ties with other artists. To my ears, their music is positively new, and because of that I found it pleasantly refreshing. I met them thanks to the fact that the video for the single Impossible Weight appeared among my suggestions on YouTube and the combination of the thumbnail with the name of the group caught my attention so I clicked on it immediately. Rarely have I been so grateful for a recommendation as in this case.

Deep Sea Diver bring us an album full of honesty and freshness that immediately shows us that in front of us we have an album of sincere music that was crafted with love. This is the work of a band that know what they want and they express it in their songs. Their music is pure and organic and invites us to reflect upon each of the songs as they unfold. We also find lightness in the music, as it is subtly decorated with instrumental details scattered throughout the album and that means that listening to them is also a beautiful walk in which we discover and rediscover all those little hidden secrets, plus it also creates a sensation of daydreaming. Everything is very real, but we see it through a thin veil, especially because of the sounds that the ethereal keyboard produces.

But what stands out the most is the voice of Jessica Dobson, who fronts Deep Sea Diver and together with her unique way of playing the guitar, are at the forefront of each of the songs on the album, which were also written by her after taking as inspiration the experiences she had after releasing the group’s previous album and the time she worked as a volunteer as a way to overcome the depression she was going through. For these reasons, the lyrics are introspective and reveal facets of how Dobson interprets the world around her and the way she wants to help those in need.

Deep Sea Diver was formed in Seattle, Washington by Jessica Dobson, who is the singer, guitarist and keyboard player and by her husband, Peter Mansen on drums, also by Garrett Gue on bass and Elliot Jackson on keyboards and guitar. Impossible Weight is the third studio album they have released and in the song that gives the album its name, Dobson is joined on the vocals by the talented Sharon Van Etten, who last year released the album Remind Me Tomorrow. Impossible Weight is a fantastic piece of work that I’m writing about because it is an album that stands out from the music that I have discovered this year and I am very happy to have found this fantastic indie rock group.
