Todos interpretamos el mundo a través de los lentes que hemos ido poniéndonos a lo largo de nuestras vidas y en mi caso veo en Burn Down Hollywood una serie de referencias a estilos y épocas musicales que se han ido dando durante los últimos 40 años, lo cual es especialmente interesante porque esta es una agrupación que lanzó su primer disco EP en febrero de 2020. Su sonido está firmemente asentado en el ámbito del hard rock pero tienen un melodioso toque único que hace fácil reconocerlos y es una combinación entre la guitarra de Andreas Amnell y los teclados de Lisa Skyler, una pareja de esposos que juntos interpretan los poderosos riffs en los que están fundamentadas sus canciones.
Las referencias que fui encontrando mientras escuché el disco son múltiples y se centran en el hard rock de finales de la década de 1980 con especial énfasis en las agrupaciones que mostraban más seriedad en su música como Guns n’ Roses y Mötley Crüe en la guitarra, letras y ritmos para después agregar al conjunto unos teclados que de inmediato nos recuerdan al sonido de Jon Lord de Deep Purple y también a Tobias Sammet de Edguy y Martijn Spierenburg de Within Temptation.
Pero lo que hace que todo funcione tan bien es la manera en la que Amnell interpreta su guitarra con soltura, sinceridad y elocuencia. No queda la menor duda que es un músico con talento de sobra pero es su forma de hacer poesía con ese instrumento lo que más me cautivó ya que unió la dureza del hard rock con le expresividad del blues. Amnell es alguien que llevó la destreza a la hora de tocar una guitarra al ámbito de la poesía y por medio de sus dedos nos habla a través del sonido sin distorsión de sus seis cuerdas.
En repetidas ocasiones he escrito que se sigue haciendo buena música y Burn Down Hollywood es un claro exponente de esto ya que no solo nos entregaron un sólido disco sino que lo hicieron con un género que no suele escucharse en la actualidad y es ese atrevimiento el que hace que sobresalgan en el panorama musical. Y en este EP encontramos canciones con garra como la que le da el nombre a la banda y al disco, también una instrumental llamada Fairfax Groove que nos recuerda a Jimmi Hendrix y hasta una balada que Andreas le escribió a su esposa Lisa Skyler, que se titula The Sun And Moon (Skyler’s Song), que resultó ser mi favorita y además tiene una de las interpretaciones de guitarra que más me han gustado este año. Burn Down Hollywood se formó en Los Ángeles por el sueco Andreas Amnell, quien es la voz principal y guitarrista y por Lisa Skyler en los teclados. Actualmente también forman parte de la agrupación Clayton Barnack en la batería y Kostas Siozos, de Grecia, en el bajo. Han lanzado dos vídeos, Burn Down Hollywood y Pirate Brother, que fue la canción por la que los descubrí. Burn Down Hollywood es una banda que vino para quedarse y no tengo duda de que tienen lo necesario para abrirse paso y seguir ampliando sus horizontes. Y por mi parte, espero que pronto podamos escuchar más de su música.

Burn Down Hollywood – Burn Down Hollywood (EP) (2020)
We all interpret the world through the lenses that we have been putting on throughout our lives and from my point of view, I see in Burn Down Hollywood a series of references to musical styles and eras that have taken place during the last 40 years, something that is especially interesting because this is a group that released their first EP album in February of 2020. Their sound is firmly rooted in the grounds of hard rock but they have a unique melodic touch that makes them easy to recognize and it is a combination between Andreas Amnell’s guitar and the keyboards of Lisa Skyler, a married couple who together perform the powerful riffs on which their songs are based.
The references that I came across while listening to the album are multiple and focus on the hard rock scene of the late 1980s with special emphasis on groups that took their music more seriously such as Guns n ‘Roses and Mötley Crüe on the guitar, lyrics and rhythms and then they added some keyboards that immediately remind us of Jon Lord from Deep Purple and also Tobias Sammet from Edguy and Martijn Spierenburg from Within Temptation.
But what makes it all work so well is the way Amnell plays his guitar with ease, sincerity and eloquence. There is no doubt that he has talent in spades, but it is his way of making poetry with his instrument that captivated me the most, as he combines the edginess of hard rock with the expressiveness of blues. Amnell is someone who brought the skill of playing a guitar to the realm of poetry and through his fingers he speaks to us through the undistorted sound of the six strings.
I have repeatedly written that great music is still being made and Burn Down Hollywood is a clear example of this because they not only have given us a solid album, they have done it with a genre that is not usually heard today and it is that boldness that makes them stand out on the music scene. And in this EP we find edgy songs like the one that gives name to the band and the album, but also an instrumental called Fairfax Groove that reminds us of Jimmi Hendrix’s playing and even a heartfelt ballad that Andreas wrote to his wife Lisa Skyler, called The Sun And Moon (Skyler’s Song), which turned out to be my favorite song on the album as it also contains one of my favorite guitar performances of this year. Burn Down Hollywood was formed in Los Angeles by Swedish born Andreas Amnell, who is the lead vocalist and guitarist, and by Lisa Skyler on keyboards. Later on they were joined by Clayton Barnack on drums and Kostas Siozos, from Greece, on bass. They have released two videos, Burn Down Hollywood and Pirate Brother, the latter being the song I discovered them with. Burn Down Hollywood is a band that’s here to stay and I have no doubt that they have what it takes to break through and continue to expand their horizons and I hope we can hear more of their music soon.
