Hay inventos que de inicio uno duda que puedan funcionar, especialmente en la etapa de idea. Postmodern Jukebox, o PMJ como también se le conoce, habría sido un buen candidato para generar dicha duda. Pero si alguna vez existió temor de que el plan no funcionara, el mismo fue disuelto al momento de ver el rotundo éxito que sus primeras canciones tuvieron.

¿La razón de ese éxito? Es algo muy sencillo, PMJ le dio al público algo que la gente realmente buscaba. Buena música.

No es ningún secreto que vivimos en una época en la que lo normal es escuchar en la radio canciones que suenan todas igual, la originalidad pasó a un plano inferior y fue reemplazada por el deseo de sobresalir y ganar dinero. El arte de hacer una buena canción fue dejado de lado.

Lo que PMJ vino a demostrar es que el público anhela la buena música, la que está hecha por amor al arte. Música que suena sincera, porque lo es. Y la gran ironía es que Scott Bradlee lo logró tomando canciones comerciales de la radio como base para sus creaciones. Todos sus lanzamientos son covers, y todos han sido sujetos a una cirugía tan profunda que cuando emergen nuevamente, siguen sonando familiares, pero fueron convertidos en algo que todos añoramos, en música. Son verdaderas obras de arte.

Sólo quedan la letra y una semblanza del ritmo original que tenían. El resto fue amorosa y meticulosamente reemplazado por ritmos y estilos clásicos, que van desde el ragtime hasta el funk, pasando por jazz, soul, blues, swing y hasta vaudeville.

Todo esto gracias a dos factores muy importantes. Primero, Scott Bradlee, el genio detrás de PMJ. Amante de los estilos clásicos de la música del siglo pasado, arregla canciones famosas, muchas de ellas actuales, en un estilo particular. Segundo, pero igual de importante, sus músicos y vocalistas. Un equipo que rota frecuentemente, pero con la característica que todos son excelentes en lo que hacen. Bradlee casi siempre está presente en sus videos, pero no se sitúa en el lugar estelar, deja que todos brillen, pues todos tienen luz propia.

La instrumentación es fantástica, con frecuencia escuchamos el piano, clarinete, saxofón, trompeta, contrabajo, violoncello y trombón además de los más usuales guitarra, batería y bajo. No es a lo que la radio nos ha acostumbrado, pero es una original propuesta que nos refresca el alma.

Y quienes hacen que brillen de manera única las canciones son los vocalistas. Los hay de diferentes estilos y tesituras y todos traen algo único a las canciones que interpretan. Varios son veteranos de American Idol. En resumen, son auténticos intérpretes con magníficas voces.

Y para darle aún más legitimidad a todo, las canciones son grabadas simultáneamente con el video, en vivo. Escuchar las grabaciones es un verdadero gusto, pero ver el video de la canción lo eleva a otro nivel. Podría decirse que no se puede tener la experiencia completa de PMJ sin ver el video.

Pero eso no es todo. También dan giras alrededor del mundo y el éxito que han tenido nuevamente demuestra la gran calidad de la obra de Bradlee, pero especialmente lo alegre y divertida que es su creación. Sueño con algún día poder estar presente en uno de sus conciertos.

Todo esto suena genial, pero hay que verlo y escucharlo para comprender realmente lo bueno que es Postmodern Jukebox, así que incluyo una selección de canciones de su gran biblioteca.

Thrift Shop, original de Macklemore. Intérprete: Robyn Adele Anderson al estilo Vintage Grandpa Style.

La que comenzó todo, el primer video que PMJ lanzó. Robyn Adele Anderson tiene un estilo de pin-up girl que lleva a cada interpretación que hace y su voz hace juego perfecto con su imagen.

Chandelier, original de Sia. Intérprete: Puddles Pity Party como la cantó en America’s Got Talent.

El payaso con la voz de oro. Uno de los mejores cantantes que se han unido a PMJ, entrega una interpretación magistral de Chandelier y transmite fielmente la dura realidad que esa canción narra, la adicción al alcohol y los efectos que trae.

Oops!… I Did It Again, original de Britney Spears. Intérprete: Haley Reinhart al estilo de Marilyn Monroe.

Una veterana de American Idol, canaliza a Marilyn Monroe para cantar y bailar como ese fantástico ícono lo hiciera décadas atrás. Presten atención al rango vocal que tiene y la firmeza con la que canta cada nota. Es algo extraordinario.

Sweet Child O’ Mine, original de Guns N’ Roses. Intérprete: Miche Braden al estilo Jazz de Nueva Orleans.

Una diva, así se describe a Miche Braden. Con una presencia que se adueña del escenario y una voz única convierte a esta canción en una de las mejores del amplio repertorio de PMJ. No importa qué tanto nos guste la original, esta versión es digna de aplaudir.

Shake It Off, original de Taylor Swift. Intérprete: Von Smith al estilo Vintage Motown.

Uno de los más jóvenes intérpretes de PMJ, Von Smith se ganó la atención de Scott Bradlee por un cover que hizo del cover de Thrift Shop. Su estilo es alegre, jovial y posee una facilidad en utilizar todo su cuerpo para darle una profundidad enorme a sus canciones.

Dream On, original de Aerosmith. Intérprete: Morgan James.

Morgan James tiene una voz capaz de alcanzar muy altos registros con facilidad y una fidelidad admirables. Canta con un aplomo que transmite seguridad a pesar de lo difícil que sabemos que es llegar a notas tan agudas y hace una bella interpretación de este clásico de Aerosmith.

All About That Bass, original de Meghan Trainor. Intérprete: Kate Davis con un estilo propio.

Billie Holiday, a ella relata Scott Bradlee que Kate Davis nos recuerda. Y es verdad. Una voz particular que le confiere a esta canción un toque único. No cabe duda que ella nació para el jazz. También interpreta el contrabajo de manera profesional y lo demuestra con un solo que nos deja con la boca abierta.

What Is Love, original de Haddaway. Intérprete: Casey Abrams al estilo de los Isley Brothers.

PMJ tiene un gran componente de «pasarla bien» y esta canción es el epítome de ello. Vean el video hasta el final, no diré más. Es interpretado por Casey Abrams como primera voz, otro veterano de American Idol y de los cantantes más entretenidos que han trabajado con Bradlee.

Closer, original de Nine Inch Nails. Intérprete: Kenton Chen al estilo Funk de los 70’s.

Con un descaro impresionante, Kenton Chen hace una fresca interpretación de Closer, una de las más famosas canciones de NIN. El resultado es el polo opuesto de la original y una de las mejores que PMJ ha lanzado. El video hay que verlo para comprender la magnitud del abismo entre este cover y la cantada por Trent Reznor.

He dedicado mucho de lo que aquí he escrito para hablar de los vocalistas, pero Postmodern Jukebox es un trabajo en equipo. Todos los involucrados aportan algo que cuando se suma, es mayor a sus partes. Desde el baterista hasta los coristas, pasando por la sección de viento, las cuerdas y la percusión,  en conjunto hacen que la obra final sea tan inolvidable como lo que hemos presenciado.

Postmodern Jukebox – The success of great music

There are inventions one doubts can work, especially at the idea stage. Postmodern Jukebox, or PMJ as it is also known, would have been a good candidate to generate such doubt. But if there was ever any fear the plan would not work, it vanished the moment people saw the resounding success that their first songs had.

The reason for that success? It’s something very simple, PMJ gave the audience something they were really looking for. Good music.

It’s no secret that we live in a time when it is normal to listen to the radio and every single song sounds the same as every other, originality was pushed to the back seat and was replaced by the desire to be famous and becoming rich in the process. The art of making a good song was kicked aside.

What PMJ came to show is that the public longs for good music. Music that comes from the heart. Music that is honest and sincere. And the greatest irony is that Scott Bradlee did it by taking several of the most popular radio songs as the basis for his creations. All their releases are covers, and all have been subjected to so deep a surgery that when they emerge again, are still very familiar, but were turned into something that we all crave, they became music. True works of art.

Only the lyrics and an inkling of the original rhythm they had remain. The rest was lovingly and meticulously replaced with classic rhythms and styles, ranging from ragtime to funk, through jazz, soul, blues, swing and even vaudeville.

All this thanks to two very important factors. First, Scott Bradlee, the genius behind PMJ. A consummate lover of the classic music styles of the last century, he arranges famous songs, many of them contemporary, in a unique style. Secondly, but equally important, the musicians and vocalists. A troupe that rotates frequently, but with the characteristic that each individual excels at what they do. Bradlee is almost always present in his videos, but he does not place himself in the spotlight, he lets everyone shine, because everyone has their own light.

The instrumentation is fantastic, we can listen to the piano, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, double bass, cello and trombone as well as the more usual guitar, drums and bass. It is not what the radio has accustomed us to, but it is an original proposal that refreshes our soul.

The ones who make the songs shine in a unique way are the vocalists. They all have different styles and vocal ranges and each of them brings something unique to the songs they perform. Many are American Idol veterans. In short, they are genuine singers with magnificent voices.

And to give legitimacy to everything, the songs are recorded simultaneously with the video, live. Listening to the recordings is a real pleasure, but watching the video raises it to another level. It could be said that you can’t have the full PMJ experience without watching the video too.

But still that is not all. They also tour around the world and the success they have had again demonstrates the great quality of Bradlee’s work, but especially how joyous and fun his creation is. My dream is to one day attend one of their concerts.

All this sounds great, but you must watch and listen to them to really understand how good Postmodern Jukebox is, so now I’ll include a selection of songs from their ample library.

The one that started everything, this is the first video that PMJ released. Robyn Adele Anderson has a pin-up girl style that defines each of her performances, plus her voice perfectly matches her image.

Chandelier, originally performed by Sia. Vocals: Puddles Pity Party as sung in America’s Got Talent.

The clown with the golden voice. One of the best singers to have joined PMJ, he delivers a masterful interpretation of Chandelier and faithfully conveys the harsh reality that song exposes, the addiction to alcohol and the effects it has on people.

Oops! … I Did It Again, originally performed by Britney Spears. Vocals: Haley Reinhart in the style of Marilyn Monroe.

An American Idol veteran, Reinhart channeled Marilyn Monroe to sing and dance like that unforgettable icon did decades ago. Pay attention to her vocal range and the poise with which she sings every note. Simply extraordinary.

A diva, that’s how Miche Braden should be described. With a presence that commands the stage and a powerful and unique voice, she makes this song one of the best in the broad PMJ repertoire. Regardless of how much we may like the original, this version is worthy of a standing ovation.

One of PMJ’s youngest performers, Von Smith won Scott Bradlee’s attention with his cover of the PMJ’s Thrift Shop cover. His style is cheerful, jovial and feels at ease using his whole body to give an enormous depth to his songs.

Dream On, originally performed by Aerosmith. Vocals: Morgan James.

Morgan James has a voice capable of reaching very high notes with ease and admirable fidelity. Sings with a poise that conveys security despite how difficult it is to reach such heights in a beautiful cover of one of Aerosmith’s classic songs.

Billie Holiday, Scott Bradlee says that Kate Davis reminds him of. And it’s true. A bassy voice that gives this song a unique touch. There can be no doubt that she was born to play and sing jazz music. Plus she plays the double bass professionally and proves it with a solo that leaves us speechless.

What Is Love, originally performed by Haddaway. Vocals: Casey Abrams in an Isley Brothers style.

PMJ has a healthy dose of «let’s have a good time» and this song clearly proves it. Watch the video until the end, I will not say anything more. Performed by Casey Abrams in the lead voice, another American Idol veteran and one of the most entertaining singers to have worked with Bradlee.

Closer, originally performed by Nine Inch Nails. Vocals: Kenton Chen in a 70’s style Funk.

Impressively cheeky here, Kenton Chen makes a fresh interpretation of Closer, one of NIN most famous songs. The result is the polar opposite of the original and one of the best that PMJ has released. The video must be watched to comprehend the abyss between this cover and the original that Trent Reznor sung.

I’ve devoted a lot of what I’ve written here to talk about the vocalists, but Postmodern Jukebox is a team effort. All those involved contribute something that when added, is greater than the sum of its parts. From the drummers to the backup singers, the wind section, the strings and the percussion. Together they make the final work as unforgettable as what we have just witnessed.
