Slayer es una banda que siempre ha marcado su propio paso. No les ha importado si lo que cantan y tocan puede resultar ofensivo para muchos. Sus letras suelen ser brutales, frías y muy crudas y en el álbum South of Heaven incluyeron una canción titulada Silent Scream, que significa «grito silencioso» en español. Lleva un ritmo frenético y es pesada como las mejores del género thrash metal por el que son legendarios. Implacable en su fuerza, es también acompañada por una letra que nos narra claramente qué ocurre cuando se decide terminar un embarazo, tanto para la mujer que está encinta como para el ser que crece dentro de ella.

El principal enfoque es en torno a la mujer embarazada y los pensamientos y sentimientos que podría estar teniendo durante todo el proceso, desde la toma de la decisión hasta luego de concluido el procedimiento.

El resultado es una canción que resulta ser pro-vida, pero envuelta en una densa capa del metal más brutal que uno podría pensar. Y no logra ese cometido por tratar de llegar al corazón o los sentimientos de las personas, lo consigue al narrar de la forma más clara y sin tapujos lo que está sucediendo. Desde el momento que alguien es concebido sin ser deseado, un bastardo, cantan. No importa qué consejo pueda haber o darse, este mundo frenético no lo permite. Pasando por la manera en la que matan a la criatura y cómo queda.

«Grito silencioso, entierra al niño no deseado. Golpeado y destazado, sacrifica al no nacido» dice esa estrofa.

Hasta el efecto en la mente de la mujer, descrito con la letra:

Embryonic death,
Embedded in your brain.
Suffocation, strangulation,
Death is fucking you insane.

«Muerte embriónica, Incrustada en tu cerebro. Sofoco, estrangulación, la muerte te está enloqueciendo» sería una traducción aproximada. Sin intención de sermonear, Slayer logra plasmar de la forma más eficiente qué ocurre cuando hay un aborto. No hay posturas ni a favor ni en contra, simplemente una narración de los hechos.

Y todo esto, dentro de una de las mejores canciones que Slayer ha lanzado, es magistral.

De todo esto, la gran ironía es que la mejor canción pro-vida que se ha escrito no trata de sensibilizar la situación o de apelar al corazón de las personas, sino que es una brutal y legítimamente pesada canción de thrash metal que no hace más que contar la verdad sin tomar partido.

Slayer and the best pro-life song ever written

Slayer is a band that has always marched to its own beat. They don’t care if what they sing and play can be offensive. Their lyrics are usually brutal, cold and very raw and on the South of Heaven album they included a song called Silent Scream. It has a frantic pace and is as heavy as the best songs of the thrash metal genre for which they are legendary. It has a relentless rhythm and lyrics that clearly explain what happens when the decision is made to end a pregnancy, both for the woman who is expecting and for the being that grows inside her.

The main focus is on the pregnant woman and the thoughts and feelings she might be having during the whole process, from the decision making moment until after the procedure is finished.

The result is a song that ends up being pro-life while wrapped in a dense layer of the most brutal metal one could think of. And they don’t achieve that task by trying to touch the heart or feelings of the listener, they manage it by relating in the clearest way and without taboos what is happening; from the moment someone is conceived without them being wanted, through the time advice may be given but without this frantic world allowing it to sink in, all  the way until they kill the creature and the different means that may be achieved with.

To the effect on the woman’s mind, described as followed:

Embryonic death,

Suffocation, strangulation,
Death is fucking you insane.

Without pretending to lecture anybody, Slayer manages to capture in the most efficient way possible what happens when an abortion takes place. There are no positions neither for nor against it, but simply a narrative of the facts.

And all this, in one of the best songs that Slayer has ever released. A thrash metal masterpiece.

In all of this, the greatest irony is that the best pro-life song that has been written is not about appealing to the hearts of the people, or a preachy tear-jerker, but a brutal and genuinely heavy thrash metal song that doesn’t do anything more that tell the facts without taking sides.
