Hay creaciones que fueron hechas en un momento, pero tienen algo en particular que nos trasladan a otro completamente diferente. Ese es el caso de Seven, el primer álbum lanzado por la banda polaca Underfate. Según la su propia descripción, tocan una mezcla entre rock progresivo, post-rock, ambient y trip-hop. El álbum tiene un aire de melancolía, en ocasiones rayando en tristeza. Pero la tonalidad que escogieron para sus teclados nos lleva a cierta música que sonó a inicios de los 90’s. En mi caso personal, esto jugó un grandísimo papel nostálgico. Pero no habría sido más que un fogonazo si la música no fuera tan buena. Es muy atmosférica y tiende a escucharse etérea, los instrumentos tienen eco y eso les proporciona una profundidad que nos levanta y nos toma de la mano para introducirnos en los soundscapes que están interpretando. Tiende a ser un álbum en el espectro suave con segmentos que llevan una contrastante potencia que aporta una agradable variedad a las canciones. No importa cuál estemos escuchando, es irresistible el impulso de mover suavemente la cabeza a ritmo de lo que nos narran los instrumentos a través de estas siete composiciones que dan título a la obra completa. Pero, destacan los teclados, ese particular sonido es lo que otorga a este álbum su individualidad y la razón principal por la cual me gusta tanto. Todos los integrantes hacen un gran trabajo, pero la labor del tecladista alcanzó a tocarme el alma.

A pesar de ser un disco totalmente instrumental, de acuerdo a lo narrado en su página de Bandcamp es la corta historia de un niño llamado Mercury y su amiga Judith. Todo lo escribe él en su diario. Ella sufre una caída desde el ático de su casa, queda en coma y a pesar de toda la esperanza que él albergó que ella despertara, no lo hace y termina muriendo.

Mercury comienza con una texturizada guitarra acompañada de los teclados. Incita a meditar y reflexionar y la melodía nos hace sentir como que estamos caminando en una nube. Luego aumenta su fuerza mientras las etéreas notas de las teclas se escuchan al fondo. Lleva el nombre del protagonista y marca la línea que el resto del álbum llevará.

Hand print es más dinámica, las guitarras están al frente y suenan al estilo de prog-rock con partes texturizadas también. El bajo apoya a la batería con notas claramente definidas. Es en partes suave y dulce y en otras cargada de energía. Cerca del final el teclado acentúa las partes de la guitarra con un riff único.

Entanglement entra con un riff de bajo para luego dar paso al resto de los instrumentos. Nos presenta un post-rock sumamente progresivo que nos recuerda a otra banda de prog-rock instrumental llamada Gordian Knot. Tiene ritmos complejos simultáneos que juegan unos con otros. Memento box comienza con los particulares teclados que ya escuchamos y por momentos nos trae a la mente el primer álbum de Enigma, el proyecto de Michael Cretu, precisamente de 1990. Dado el título, nos podemos imaginar que gira en torno a un recuerdo, a algo que ya pasó. Sólo quedan la memoria y el tributo que podamos ofrecer por el ser que ha partido.

One step over entra de lleno con notas lúgubres en un piano, como si estuviera tratando de contarnos que algo trágico ha ocurrido. Seguramente Mercury está escribiendo qué le ocurrió a su amiga Judith. La canción está dividida en dos partes. La segunda comienza con el sonido de latidos de corazón y es aún más triste que la primera. Ahora es la guitarra la que lleva la melodía. Conforme avanza se torna más animada, como si el sol estuviera empezando a salir luego de una poderosa tormenta.

OOBE es la canción más larga del ábum. Tiene gran cantidad de cambios, en un momento nos recuerda de lleno a los teclados de Dream Theater, en otro los mismos nos trasladan al interior de un RPG de la serie Ultima, también de finales de los 80’s. En sí este tema nos lleva de viaje, mientras más nos adentramos, más paisajes nuevos escuchamos. El ritmo sube y baja de acuerdo a las necesidades de lo que están interpretando y nos permite disfrutar de un balanceado y complejo prog-rock instrumental. OOBE puede significar Out of body experience por sus siglas en inglés. Un título muy apto tanto para la música interpretada como para la historia que se está narrando.

Way out es la conclusión lógica de todo. Da la impresión que Mercury fue por fin capaz de superar la muerte de su amiga. Nuevos horizontes llegan y la vida continúa, vuelve a ver hacia adelante y hay un futuro que le espera. La música es reconfortante y aunque no llega a ser alegre, da paz y cierra el ciclo.

Underfate – Seven (2015)

There are creations that were made at a moment in time, but they have something in particular that moves us to another completely different one. That is the case of Seven, the first album released by the Polish band Underfate. According to their own description, they play a mix between progressive rock, post-rock, ambient and trip-hop. The album has an air of melancholy, sometimes bordering on sadness. But the tone they chose for their keyboards takes us to a certain kind music from the beginning of the 90’s. In my personal case, this played a huge nostalgic role. But what really takes it to another level is the music, which is excellent. It is very atmospheric and tends to sound ethereal, the instruments have echo and that gives them a depth that takes us by the hand to introduce us to the soundscapes they are playing. It tends to be an album in the softer spectrum with segments that carry a contrasting power that brings a pleasant variety to the songs. No matter what piece we are listening to, the impulse to gently move the head to the rhythm of what the instruments tell us through these seven compositions that give title to the complete work is irresistible. But, the keyboards stand out, that particular sound is what gives this album its individuality and the main reason why I like it so much. All the members do a great job, but the work of the keyboard player touched my soul.

Despite being a completely instrumental album, according to what is narrated on their Bandcamp page, tells the story of a boy named Mercury and his friend Judith. Everything is written in his diary. She suffers a fall from the attic of her house, is in a coma and despite all the hope that he hosted that she would wake up, does not and ends up dying.

Mercury begins with a textured guitar accompanied by keyboards. It encourages us to meditate and reflect and the melody makes us feel like we are walking on a cloud. Then it increases its strength while the ethereal notes of the keys are heard in the background. It’s the name of the protagonist and marks the line that the rest of the album will follow.

Hand print is more dynamic, the guitars are at the forefront with a prog-rock sound and textured parts. The bass supports the drums with clearly defined notes. It is soft and sweet at times and filled with energy afterwards. Near the end the keyboard accentuates the guitar parts with a unique riff.

Entanglement begins with a bass riff to then give way to the rest of the instruments. It presents us an extremely progressive post-rock that reminds us of another instrumental prog-rock band called Gordian Knot. It has simultaneous complex rhythms that play with each other. Memento box begins with the particular keyboards we already heard and at times brings to mind the first album of Enigma, Michael Cretu’s project, precisely from 1990. Given the title, we can imagine that it revolves around a recollection, something that has already happened. Only the memory and the tribute we can offer for the departed soul remain.

One step over commences with sad notes being played on a piano, as if telling us that something terrible has occurred. Surely Mercury is writing about what happened to her friend Judith. The song is divided into two parts. The second one begins with the sound of heartbeats and is even sadder than the first. Now it is the guitar that carries the melody. As it progresses it becomes more upbeat, as if the sun is starting to rise after a powerful storm.

OOBE is the album’s longest song. It has a lot of changes, at one time it reminds us completely of Dream Theater’s keyboards and in another they transport us into an RPG from the Ultima series, also from the late 80’s. In itself this theme takes us on a journey, the deeper we go, the more varied are the soundscapes we hear. The rhythm rises and falls according to the needs of what they are playing and allows us to enjoy a balanced and complex instrumental prog-rock. OOBE may mean Out of body experience by its acronym. A very apt title both for the music performed and for the story that is being narrated.

Way out is the logical conclusion of the story. It gives the impression that Mercury was finally able to overcome the death of his friend. New horizons arrive and life goes on, he gazes ahead and there is a future that’s waiting for him. The music is comforting and although it does not become joyful, gives off peace and closure to the cycle.
