Cuando algo es bueno, funciona bien desde el principio. Long Distance Calling es una banda alemana que ha lanzado seis álbumes con la envidiable reputación de ser todos excelentes. Este año salió al mercado el más reciente, titulado Boundless, que en español significa «sin límites». La razón es porque en esta ocasión no hay letras ni vocalistas, contrario a los anteriores, donde siempre había más de alguna cantada. El resultado es un álbum brillante. No sólo dentro de su discografía, también en todo el género post-rock. Nada menos que una maravilla. La música de LDC suele ser pesada dentro del espectro que maneja el post-rock, utilizando riffs dignos de heavy metal que constantemente incitan al headbanging o como mínimo, a seguir el ritmo con un pie. Ese es su estilo, una propuesta más fuerte y muy bien definida. Sus canciones tienen ritmos complejos pero accesibles y con una cantidad de cambios que nos recuerdan al metal progresivo, un género que también han asimilado en su música. En cada pieza exploran muchas ideas y a pesar de lo dispares que podrían ser unas de otras, siempre encuentran la manera de unirlas de una manera tan orgánica que engrandecen la canción. Todo el sonido es muy bien demarcado y los soundscapes que emplea el género son de gran claridad y definición. Boundless está cargado de una energía que consigue que todo nuestro cuerpo vibre al compás, es un deleite el escucharlo y gustará a quienes aprecian el post-rock más fuerte y también a los fieles seguidores tanto del heavy metal como del progresivo.

Dejé volar mi imaginación y di una interpretación muy personal a cada una de las 8 canciones que tiene el álbum. Fue una muy interesante experiencia el plasmar en palabras los sentimientos que fui teniendo con cada una. Espero que puedan sentir esas emociones también y disfrutar de esta mágica música de la mano del texto que la misma me inspiró a escribir.

Out there nos recibe con una batería cargada de energía que inmediatamente se hace acompañar del resto de los instrumentos. Es fuerte y desde ya nos deja entrever la línea que lleva el álbum. Pronto comienzan los cambios rítmicos y cada uno de ellos está tan bien realizado que no nos damos cuenta de que esta es una canción de más de nueve minutos. Las melodías son llevadas por las guitarras y un teclado que escuchamos con menos intensidad. El bajo también suena claramente con un sonido muy agradable. Cuando empieza el último tercio, retoma fuerza y podemos sentir cómo la música nos lleva a un viaje maravilloso con un riff que se repite para conseguir ponernos en un glorioso trance.

Ascending también comienza con fuerza y las guitarras entran desde el inicio dispuestas a dejar una fuerte impresión. Sentimos como hace honor al título, nos toma de la mano y ascendemos paulatinamente al ritmo que nos marca. Cada cambio nos impulsa, como una corriente térmica debajo de nuestras musicales alas. Cada vez nos elevamos más y sentimos la frescura del frío viento de las alturas. Allí nos quedamos por unos minutos que se nos vuelven demasiado cortos hasta que termina la canción, abrimos los ojos y seguimos flotando, para continuar la experiencia en las nubes.

In the clouds nos sujeta desde el punto en el que Ascending nos dejó. A pesar de que no están conectadas las dos canciones, ahora sentimos cómo nos encontramos entre las nubes en un delicado vuelo. Luego de una extendida introducción, nuevamente nos ponemos en movimiento siguiendo la dirección marcada por las guitarras. El bajo toca notas que nos dan impulsos y la batería nos acelera con su ritmo. Cada cambio es una nueva vista, no nos detenemos en ningún momento. A medida que se pone más fuerte la melodía nos acercamos a unas grises nubes y quedamos suspendidos allí hasta que se acaba el viaje. Abrimos nuevamente los ojos y estamos de pie frente a un río.

Like a river se presenta con el ruido de agua corriendo, viento, electricidad y unas delicadas guitarras que suenan con una temática del viejo oeste. El ritmo es más suave pero incesante, estamos siendo llevados al ritmo de la batería y el bajo mientras las guitarras nos pintan el paisaje. Una sección de viento marca el primer cambio y seguimos avanzando con la corriente. Más adelante nos recibe una sección de cuerdas que se escuchan con melancolía, pero el ritmo que llevamos no varía, sólo se hace más suave hasta que cesa y nuevamente quedamos inmóviles.

The far side nos recibe con sonidos que nos hacen sentir en un paisaje de ciencia ficción hasta que la batería entra tocando y nos impulsa a avanzar. Hay luces por todos lados. Nos encontramos en el balcón de un altísimo edificio y vemos la vasta ciudad debajo de nosotros mientras nos maravillamos de todo lo que esa metrópolis alberga. Vemos diversidad de vehículos volando ordenadamente. Todo brilla, está limpio y reluciente. Estamos presentes en un futuro que de momento no existe más que dentro de nuestra imaginación. Nos despedimos con unos fuertes riffs en las guitarras pero sin olvidar dónde hemos estado.

On the verge comienza suavemente, es un respiro temporal en lo que arriba la siguiente marea musical. Estamos dentro de una cueva casi a oscuras. Luego de un minuto, comienzan a encenderse las primeras luces, brillan en forma de esferas. Comenzamos a ver que está cubierta de vegetación. El aire es fresco y cerca tenemos una laguna poco profunda y cristalina. Sube más la fuerza de la música y se encienden ya todas las luces que hay. Pero todavía no se mueven, esperan a la música que está a punto de dar un enérgico giro, se preparan y comienza el espectáculo. Todas las fuentes de luz flotan al unísono, formando figuras e imágenes maravillosas cada vez más complejas al compás del ritmo de la música hasta que la misma concluye y logramos empezar a comprender la belleza de la que acabamos de ser testigos.

Weightless es etérea y difusa y nos infunde una sensación de fresca y relajante liviandad. Flotamos y descansamos al ritmo de la música. Todo lo que nos rodea comienza a opacarse y nos abstraemos hasta que disfrutamos del viaje. Hay colores que van cambiando como en oleadas impulsadas por las notas que escuchamos. Todo lo observamos desde dentro de una esfera en la que estamos suspendidos. La guitarra al final nos marca que hemos llegado a nuestro destino. Abrimos los ojos, hemos llegado a la última estación.

Skydivers nos lleva nuevamente a las alturas. Estamos en un pequeño avión, de pie al lado de la puerta abierta. Saltamos. El viento aumenta conforme ganamos velocidad. El suelo está lejos y tenemos suficiente tiempo para maravillarnos de esa intensa sensación que estamos viviendo. Aunque nos encontramos en ese lugar, la música nos incita a un headbanging en medio del aire. El suelo está cerca, queda poco tiempo antes de abrir el paracaídas. La guitarra nos acaricia con un solo que se traduce en esa tela que frena nuestro frenético descenso para lentamente llegar a poner los pies de nuevo en tierra. El viaje fue fantástico. Regresamos llenos de energía y dispuestos a enfrentar lo que venga.

Y así concluye este espectacular álbum, que es digno de ser escuchado muchas veces.

Long Distance Calling – Boundless (2018)

When something is good, it shows from the start. Long Distance Calling is a German band that has released six albums with the enviable reputation of all of them being excellent. This year the most recent one came out, titled Boundless. The reason is because on this occasion there are no lyrics or vocalists, contrary to the previous ones, when there was always at least a song with lyrics. The result is a brilliant album. Not only in their discography, but also in the entire post-rock genre. Nothing less than a masterpiece. LDC music is usually heavy within the post-rock boundaries, using riffs worthy of heavy metal that constantly incite headbanging or at least, to follow the beat while tapping your foot. That is their style, a stronger and very well defined proposal. Their songs have complex but accessible rhythms and a number of changes that remind us of progressive metal, a genre that they have also assimilated in their music. In each piece they explore many ideas and regardless of how disparate they could be from each other, they always find a way to unite them in such an organic manner that they exalt the song. All the sound is bright and the soundscapes are of great clarity and definition. Boundless is loaded with an energy that makes our whole body vibrate to the beat, it is a delight to listen to it and it will please those who appreciate the strongest side of post-rock and also the faithful followers of both heavy metal and progressive.

I let my imagination soar and gave a very personal interpretation to each of the 8 songs thatmake up this album. It was a very interesting experience to put into words the feelings I was having with each one. I hope you can feel those emotions as well and enjoy this magic guided by what they inspired me to write.

Out There greets us with drumming that’s full of energy and it’s immediately accompanied by the rest of the instruments. It is strong and already lets us glimpse the line that the album follows. Soon the rhythmic changes begin and each of them is so well performed that we do not realize that this is a song over nine minutes long. The melodies are carried by the guitars and a keyboard that we listen with less intensity. The bass also sounds clearly with a very pleasant sound. When the last part begins, it regains strength and we can feel how the music takes us on a wonderful journey with a riff that is repeated to get us into a glorious trance.

Ascending also begins with strength and the guitars enter from the start ready to leave a strong impression. We feel like it honors the title, it takes us by the hand and we gradually ascend to the rhythm shown to us. Each change propels us, like a thermal current under our musical wings. As we keep climbing, we feel the freshness of the cold wind high up in the sky. There we stay for a few minutes that feel too short until the song ends, we open our eyes and still floating, to continue the experience in the clouds.

In the Clouds grabs us from the point where Ascending left. Although the two songs are not connected, we now feel among the clouds in a delicate flight. After an extended introduction, we start moving again following the direction marked by the guitars. The bass plays notes that give us impulses and the drums accelerate our bodies with their rhythm. Each change is a new landscape, we don’t stop at any moment. As the melody gets louder we approach gray clouds and stay suspended there until the trip is over. We open our eyes again and we find ourselves standing in front of a river.

Like a River begins with the noise of running water, wind, electricity and some delicate guitars that sound like an old west theme. The rhythm is softer but incessant, we are being taken by the rhythm of the drums and bass while the guitars paint the landscape. A wind section marks the first change and we continue advancing with the current. Later we meet a section of strings that are laden with melancholy, but the rhythm that we carry does not change, it only becomes softer until it ceases and again we are motionless.

The Far Side welcomes us with sounds that make us feel in a sci-fi landscape until the drums come  and drive us forward. There are lights everywhere. We are on the balcony of a towering building and we see the vast city below us as we marvel at everything that this metropolis harbors. We see a diversity of vehicles flying nearby. Everything shines, is pristine and gleaming. We are standing in a future that currently only exists within our imagination. We say goodbye with some strong riffs on the guitars but without forgetting where we have been.

On the Verge begins smoothly, it is a temporary respite while the next musical tide arrives. We are inside a cave in almost complete darkness. After a minute, the first lights begin to glow, they shine in the form of spheres. We begin to see that it is covered with vegetation. The air is cool and close to our spot we find a shallow and crystal clear lagoon. The force of the music rises more and all the lights are turned on. But they stay still, they wait for the music that is about to take a brisk turn, they get ready and the show begins. All the light sources float in unison, forming figures and marvelous images synched to the rhythm of the music until it ends and we start to understand the beauty of what we have just witnessed.

Weightless is ethereal and diffuse and gives us a feeling of fresh and relaxing lightness. We float and relax to the rhythm of the music. Everything that surrounds us begins to dim and we dream as we enjoy the trip. There are colors that change as in waves driven by the notes we hear. We all observe it from within a sphere in which we are suspended. The guitar at the end shows us that we have reached our destination. We open our eyes, we have arrived at the last station.

Skydivers takes us back to the heights. We are in a small plane, standing next to the open door. We jump and the wind increases as we gather speed. The ground is far away and we have enough time to marvel at that intense feeling we are experiencing. Although we are in that place, the music incites us to headbang in mid air. The ground is nearer, there is little time before opening the parachute. The guitar caresses us with a solo that translates into that fabric that slows our frenetic descent to slowly land our feet back on the ground. The trip was fantastic. We return full of energy and ready to face whatever comes our way.

And this concludes this spectacular album, which is worthy of being listened to over and over again.
