Hace un mes el dúo islandés Katla. lanzó un sencillo titulado Farg que resultó ser una de las mejores canciones que he escuchado en mucho tiempo, tanto que llegué a pensar que tal vez habrían presentado el mejor tema de su nuevo disco, titulado Allt þetta Helvítis Myrkur. Por fortuna estaba equivocado, porque este álbum mantiene la calidad de Farg, e incluso la supera en repetidas ocasiones, algo que no parecía posible luego del impacto que Farg provocó cuando la escuché. Einar y Gummi son dos genios, esto lo digo con toda sinceridad pues la música que plasmaron en este LP es magistral, escucharlo es un viaje a través de las emociones y se disfruta más cuando se oye de principio a fin sin interrupciones. Allt þetta Helvítis Myrkur es una obra maestra del heavy metal, un género al que Katla. han dado su propia interpretación, tan única como Islandia, su país de origen. Y además, todas las letras están en islandés y aunque muchos no entendamos ese idioma, su mensaje se entiende sin problemas.

Este es un disco oscuro, no solo por la densa atmósfera que tiene sino también porque evoca esa parte del día en la que el sol se puso y la luz desaparece. Y tiene mucho sentido, pues el título en español se puede traducir como Toda esta Oscuridad Infernal y es porque su inspiración son las bajas presiones atmosféricas que se dan entre Islandia y Groenlandia y que producen fuertes vientos invernales sobre el Atlántico Norte, algo que ellos mismos han descrito. Ese duro clima es traducido a música y el sorprendente resultado son las canciones de este álbum. Es un disco emotivo y dentro de su sombría cobertura encontramos música que nos conmueve e inspira a meditar, pues el sentimiento que se transmite es el de una persona que sabe que está bajo la influencia de una severa tormenta, literal y emocionalmente, pero ha aceptado eso como su realidad, la recibe y la hace parte de su vida para seguir caminando hacia adelante rodeado de una melancolía que se siente a través de todo el disco.

Escuchar este álbum es una experiencia única y cada canción nos ofrece un panorama diferente, como la desgarradora Villuljós (Luz De Error), la energía de Húsavíkur-Jón y el sublime final, compuesto por las dos últimas canciones, Allt þetta helvítis myrkur y Svartnætti (Noche Negra) que cierran el álbum con una introspección que dentro de toda la penumbra emana esperanza. Como ya dijera, la totalidad de este disco es sobresaliente, pero los dos últimos temas son maravillosos. Allt þetta helvítis myrkur es un disco hecho con sentimiento, dedicación y una entrega que raya en la devoción y ambos integrantes de Katla. han impregnado esas cualidades en su trabajo, que se nota fue realizado poniendo sumo cuidado a todos los detalles, desde cada nota interpretada hasta la selección fotográfica, hecha en su totalidad por Gummi.

Katla. – Allt þetta Helvítis Myrkur (LP) (2020)

A month ago the Icelandic duo Katla. released a single called Farg that turned out to be one of the best songs I’ve listened to in a long time, so much so that for a moment I thought that perhaps they had featured the best song from the Deluxe Edition of their new album, titled Allt þetta Helvítis Myrkur. Fortunately I was wrong, because this album maintains the quality of Farg, and even surpasses it on repeated occasions, something that did not seem possible after the impact that Farg had on me when I first heard it because that song is astounding. Einar and Gummi, the members of Katla., are geniuses, I say this with all sincerity because the music they recorded for this LP is work of art, listening to it is a journey through emotions made even more enjoyable when played from beginning to end without interruptions. Allt þetta Helvítis Myrkur is a heavy metal masterpiece, a genre to which Katla. have given their own interpretation, as unique as Iceland, their country of origin. Also, all the lyrics are in Icelandic and although many of us do not understand that language, its message is clearly understood.

This is a dark album, not only because of the dense atmosphere it has but also because it evokes that part of the day when the sun gives way to the night. And it makes sense, because the title means All this Infernal Darkness in English, and it is so because their inspiration, as was told by them, is the low atmospheric pressures that occur between Iceland and Greenland that produce strong winter winds over the North Atlantic. That harsh climate is translated into music and the surprising result is the collection of songs on this album. It is emotional and within its gloomy outer layer we find music that moves and inspires us to think, because the feeling that is being transmitted is that of an individual who has realized is under the influence of a severe storm, literally and emotionally. But this weather has been accepted as his reality, and continues to walk forward while being surrounded by the melancholy that is felt throughout the album.

Listening to this album is a unique experience as each song offers us a different panorama, such as the piercing Villuljós (Error Light), the energy and passion of Húsavíkur-Jón and the sublime ending, made up of the last two songs, Allt þetta helvítis myrkur and Svartnætti (Black Night) that close the album with an introspection that emanates hope from within all the gloom. As I said, the whole album is outstanding, but the last two songs are on another level. Allt þetta helvítis myrkur is an album made with passion and a dedication that borders on devotion and both members of Katla. have infused these qualities into their work, and it is evident that it was crafted with great care in every detail, from each note played to the photographic selection, made entirely by Gummi.
